Small local models need a narrow task and a fair test
Compare the exact model on your laptop against the quality bar your work requires.
A small local model can handle a task as well as a cloud model when the job is narrow, the necessary evidence is available, and both meet your quality standard on real examples. Extraction, familiar classification, and short rewrites are promising candidates, but fitting a model on your laptop does not establish that it can do your work reliably.
Tasks become easier to check when the answer is already in the input. At WWDC 2025, Apple described its roughly three-billion-parameter on-device model as designed for summarization, extraction, and classification, with world knowledge and advanced reasoning outside its intended strengths. From those boundaries, sorting familiar emails or extracting delivery dates looks more promising than investigating an unfamiliar problem across many sources, though that remains a hypothesis to test.
The exact model file matters because compression changes the comparison. The llama.cpp documentation explains quantization, which stores learned weights at lower precision to reduce memory use, with possible accuracy costs. As an idealized calculation, eight billion weights at four bits require four decimal gigabytes for the weights alone; actual formats add overhead, and the operating system and running application need memory too.
Long input adds another constraint that a short demonstration can hide. Hugging Face explains that a key-value cache reuses attention calculations, with memory behavior depending on the cache and attention design. Test your longest expected document with other apps open, then measure the first request after loading, repeated requests, and correction time, since removing a network trip does not guarantee a faster finished result.
Build a comparison around representative examples and decide what counts as a serious error before seeing the outputs. Keep some cases untouched while adjusting prompts, give both systems the same relevant evidence, and include ambiguous requests, missing fields, and long passages. This proposed test can reveal a poor fit, but a small sample cannot establish rare-error rates, and valid JSON cannot prove that a summary kept every important condition.
Use the local model inside the range it has passed, with human review or a suitable fallback when inputs exceed that range.
